Why I Chose doTERRA

Lavendar doTERRA oil bottleIf you have not heard, you may soon hear all the debates about which essential oil is best. Very few people are debating about how effective they are, but there is a firm line in the sand for some as to which one is best. I liken it to the Coke vs. Pepsi, vinegar-based vs. tomato-based sauces, chocolate vs. vanilla debate. Actually it is far more serious of a debate than that, but I don’t want to go any further down that road. I just know that it’s Coke, vinegar and chocolate! That said, I can only have vinegar from that list!

Okay, back to oils!  About two years ago, I became interested in essential oils and their impact on helping support the body. I soon learned there were two companies vying for first place. Both seemed sure they held the title.  Some were sure it was doTERRA and others would argue the same for Young Living. I familiarized myself with information on both companies and did not feel a particular pull towards either.

May 2014 that changed. At our annual homeschool conference I began a conversation with a doTERRA Wellness Advocate. I had stopped by the booth to get a bit of information since they were there as a vendor. I immediately clicked with her (Laura). Even still I did not make a decision.  She and I spoke several times over the next couple of months. The conversations were so much more than oils. We talked about the most important thing in our lives, our faith. We talked about both having adopted and biological kids. We talked and talked. A friendship blossomed. By July, I knew that I wanted to journey with her on the doTERRA path. That was how I made my decision. Relationships trump most things in my opinion.

That said, one of my closest friends is just as excited about the benefits of Young Living as I am about doTERRA. She had forged a relationship with someone in the Young Living about the same time I was getting to know Laura. Again, relationships trump. She went with Young Living. Given how much we value our relationship, neither of us would consider debating oils. Both of us have found something to help our families. That is what is important, but our relationship is far more important.

One of the most important things you can do to help you be healthy is to surround yourself with healthy relationships. They fuel us rather than drain us. I hope that you are able to have positive people pouring into you. I recently saw a quote that said, “If love is not being served at the table, get up from the table.” Evaluate your relationships. Do you need to get up from that table and go and sit somewhere else? Be healthy! Join the movement!

Our Home

HomeI am often struck by the number of homes some people have lived in. The path that life takes us tends to dictate that number. The styles of the homes vary as much as the number. Think about your own journey. How many places have you called home? Think about all the chores involved in taking care of the space. There’s cleaning to be done, leaks to be repaired, busted pipes to be replaced, kitchens to be renovated and so many other things. The to-do list seems endless. Sometimes we decide that the space is no longer a fit for us and we decide it’s best to move to another location. We think good riddance!

Our bodies are also our home and while they can be repaired, parts can be replaced and many parts can be rejuvenated, there is not the option to move to another location. One body equals one location. Our body is our greatest asset. They have gone under contract. They have been paid for and we are to be good stewards of them. How are you doing with that? Let’s do an inspection by starting at the very beginning.

Before the foundation can be laid, the earth had to be dug out. There is nothing like the upheaval of soil. It’s forced from its resting place and tossed to the side like covers thrown off a body that’s too warm. The emptiness becomes an ideal place for building to take place. Are there things in your life that need to be unearthed and pushed to the side so that building can take place? After that work is done, the foundation is ready to be laid. This is important work because it supports everything that’s to come. The foundation needs to be solid, sure, and firm. Do you have a solid foundation? If not, what is it that you need to firm up? Soon the crawl space is built. Most of the time, looking around in a crawl space requires crawling on your hands and knees. This position allows some up close observations. I once read that if you want to succeed faster, you have to fall faster. A fast fall usually lands you on your knees! That is a hard, but great place to be. It puts you in a posture of prayer, humbleness and it stirs an eagerness to rise. You are able to see things previously unnoticed or neglected. You will be able to see if the foundation is secure. Sometimes you may see something that requires an exterminator. Are there things in your crawl space that need to be removed? The work done there will help to ensure that what is built next is secure. Layer by layer, your home is built.

Soon you’ll have walls, roof, pipes, insulation, gutters and the makings of a house near completion. The roof and walls will provide you protection from the outside elements. Have you secured healthy walls of protection? Are those enclosed pipes secured tightly and made of a substance that is not easily cracked? Do you need to replace some leaky pipes? Those slow drips can over time cause some extensive damage. Identify your leaks and repair them today! After the roof is installed, it is a good idea to get those gutters in place very soon. They help to ensure proper drainage. If they get clogged, they are not able to work as well. Are there situations, circumstances or people causing your gutter to be clogged? If so, it’s time for some de-clogging! Many roofs will have a chimney. They can be a beautiful addition, but one that requires careful observation. The fire that the chimney supports will need to be replenished, stoked and observed frequently. Is there an area in your life that needs to be replenished, stoked or needs some special attention? Chimneys are associated with smoke and fire. We know where there is smoke, there is often fire. Has your body been giving you some smoke signals serving as a warning that a fire is imminent, if issues are not soon addressed?

What’s a living space without windows, doors and steps? Windows serve two purposes. You can peer out and in. Peering out allows you to look out with hope. It helps you set your sights on things not yet obtained. You can catch a glimpse of hope on the horizon. Looking inward calls for lots of self-reflection. What needs to be addressed for you to become healthy? What doors do you need to open to walk onto a path towards wholeness? What steps do you have to take? Are you ready to start? If so, join the movement!

What Does This Mean?

Fresh Start At first glance, it is an emblem that symbolizes my certification from a health coach program I
completed. However, it is so much more than that. First of all, it means relationships. God ordained that I would find the Fresh Start for Health program online late last fall. I was immediately connected with the CEO and Founder, Bess Blanco. She became a fast friend. Her love for the Lord and others oozed out of her emails, phone calls and messages. Almost immediately, I know I wanted to be a part of the Fresh Start for Health family. I chose the word family intentionally because that was what it was from the beginning. Bess fostered that kind of relationship with me and others enrolled in the program and it spread between us. Through our Facebook group and weekly calls we became very close. While I know the richness of some great relationships, in real life, I had not known such depth in online relationships. Yes, there were weekly reading assignments, homework, weekly calls, goal setting, vision casting, mission statements to write, etc. but there was also a sisterhood. I could not have asked for a better experience in a health coach program, nor in the subsequent support that I continue to receive! God knew that this highly relational girl would thrive in such an environment and I did and continue to do so!

Ready. Set. Goals.

postNotesGive me some sticky notes and ink pens and I am a happy girl! I have little collections of them all around the house. For me they serve as my simplest form of goal making/achieving. I find them handy when I am reading to jot down words that I do not know. That helps me reach my goals of keeping an ongoing list of words to learn the definition of. I keep them near my bible to jot down verses I want to transfer to index cards for scripture memory.  I have them handy when I am teaching the kids so that I can jot down things I need to discuss with them later.  I keep them in my pocketbook to jot down things that come to mind that I don’t want to forget.  They are everywhere and they help me to achieve my short term goals.  Yes, I have a smart phone, but to me my sticky notes are smarter!  Their assorted colors and shapes are too cute to resist!

Then there’s that white, rectangular object with blue horizontal lines and one red vertical line! Be still my heart!  I love notebook paper! You can do some serious goal setting with that!  That may have been where my trouble with goal setting began.  I figured the paper needed to be filled with things to do and those things needed to get done post haste. Before my journey towards wholeness, I kept my goal setting at an unrealistic pace.  My list was always too long and the timeframe to get it done was always too short. While I could control both those factors, I chose to drive myself at an unhealthy pace. That scenario was a contributing factor to my health crisis.

That crisis changed the way that I did many things and setting goals was one of them. Suddenly the list had to be shortened and the timeframe lengthened. I had to prioritize like never before. I soon learned that everything did not have to be done with urgency. I also learned that I had to become a priority in my life. Taking care of me became one of my main goals.  Since I knew my list needed to be shortened, I started to transition my list to post-it notes that look like index cards. I still get to enjoy the blue lines and one red line! I know written goals get done, but I needed to write on a smaller piece of paper!

Given that goals need plans, I try to put my plan into place soon after deciding on the goal.  That had never been the case where my health was concerned.  I had a goal, but never implemented a plan.  As a result, when my body was in crisis, I had to dive in and start to make immediate changes. If making healthy food choices is one of your goals, I would encourage you to make a plan to move away from the side of the pool and at least get your feet wet.  Take some time to think about what it would take for you. Do you need to drink more water? Do you need to drink less coffee or soft drinks? Do you need to eliminate sugar?  Decide today what it would take for you to become whole.

Goals need to be smart! I read once that they need to be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-sensitive. While we all will have different goals, starting with that formula will help us reach them. Keep your goals in mind daily and do what it takes to realistically move towards them. Don’t forget why you started and keep going! Join the movement!

Some action items to consider:

Consider creating a vision board and be motivated by the vision you create.

Make you a priority.

Give yourself a mid-year assessment. Are you on track with your New Year goals? Do you need to create some new ones or brush off some old ones?

Take the next steps.

Don’t wait for someday. It does not exist.

Let your goals drive you.

Sow what you want! You can do it!

My recent journey has taught me so much about setting goals. I now set realistic ones more often.  I try to pray more than I plan.  I am learning to look (up) before I leap. I’m growing in my trust of His timing and His plans for me.

Community

Community of handsDoing life in community with others can be a beautiful thing. To experience deep, rich community is one of life’s greatest gifts. Suffering in community makes the journey much more bearable. During my journey towards wholeness, suffering ran deep, but the Lord’s faithfulness and the gift of community ran deeper.  Both made hope come alive in me. It is that message of hope that I want to extend to you.

Today a new sprout of hope rose in me. I opened my email to find a Dayspring card from Emily, a middle school young lady from church. She has encouraged me countless times over the last year. Months ago she told me I was on her prayer list and that she prayed for me every day. To hear that warmed my heart and moistened my eyes.  Today the same thing happened.  The card held such a sweet message.  It read……thinking about you with my heart….remembering you in my prayers. All prayers for you are full of praise to God. Philippians 1:3( TLB)  Time and time again, notes, cards, emails, texts, etc. have come at just the right time. Today was one of those times.

What about you?  Do you have a strong community?  Do you have people speaking truth into your life?  Do you have someone you can call on at any time?  Do you have a shoulder to cry on? Do you have someone to rejoice with you?  If not, that is my prayer for you as you walk your path to wholeness.  May the Lord comfort you as you wait.  Might you boldly ask others to walk with you? Paul’s words to the Romans come to mind.” I urge you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to join in my struggle by praying to God for me.” Romans 15:30.

While nothing replaces relationships that are in real life, it is my prayer that  HealthTurners  can provide a sense of community to many.  I hope to fill the blog with entries that will draw us together.  Additionally, there will be the option to get my newsletter.  It will be filled with gems to help us on the journey.  Facebook post will help us connect frequently.  Lastly, the HealthTurners Movement will be the most interactive online community. This private group will serve as a place to walk alongside others as we all journey towards wholeness. I am so confident that this will serve as a bonding tool that I have lowered the price of the membership. Access to the group and its benefits is priced at $97/year.  Until Friday morning, the membership fee will be $80, with the option to renew at this rate. The option to pay in two installments is available.

Regardless of the path you choose, it is my prayer that here you will be encouraged, spurred and more fully understand the strength of community and the hope the Lord offers.
